As a patient, there are many different reasons why you may require surgery. Whatever the nature of your personal situation, you will experience one of two standardised ‘journeys’—or pathways—at Mercy Hospital for Women: emergency surgery or elective surgery. Find out more about what you can expect for each experience, and how to best prepare.

We provide a range of emergency and elective surgery for women’s health at Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW).

In a medical emergency

Patients requiring emergency surgery will be seen to in the most appropriate amount of time, based on clinical assessment and the associated urgency of your needs.

Elective surgery at Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW)

If you require elective surgery at Mercy Hospital for Women, first visit your general practitioner or medical specialist. They will refer you to our Outpatient Department where you will be given an appointment based on your condition and urgency. If an operation is required, you will be placed on an elective surgery waiting list.

A range of elective surgical specialties are offered at Mercy Hospital for Women including:

  • general gynaecology
  • endosurgery
  • reproductive biology
  • urogynaecology
  • gynaecological oncology
  • obstetrics.

Please note, our general Outpatients Department is located on Level 3. Day Surgery is located on Level 1, and our Surgical Inpatient Ward is located on Level 6.

Mercy Hospital for Women offers specialist services for maternity,  gynaecology,  perinatal mental health and a limited range of paediatric and allied health services. To access any of these services you will need a referral from your GP or other specialist.
