Throughout your experience you may be supported by:
- a nurse
- a general surgeon
- a registrar or registered medical officer.
For health professionals
The General Surgery clinic offers patients an opinion on surgical or conservative management for their symptoms. The referral guidelines provide a comprehensive list of conditions seen.
Procedural information
Minor skin lesions, lumps and bumps can be attended to under local anaesthetic in the Excision of Lesion Clinic.
How to prepare the patient
Please advise your patient that it takes eight days to process a referral. On day eight a letter will be sent to them and the referrer advising of the referral outcome (either an appointment or allocation to the waiting list). For more information on what happens next, please refer to our understanding the referral process page.
If your patient’s condition changes before they see the specialist, they should either contact their GP or go to Emergency Department.
What/when you should refer to us
You should refer any patients requiring general surgical opinion or management.
What/when you should not refer to us
Please do not refer patients requiring a colonoscopy for a positive faecal occult blood test (FOBT). Please refer them to the Rapid Access Colonoscopy Clinic.
Please do not refer acute conditions requiring emergency care. Patients should be referred directly to the Emergency Department.
