Overview
Urogynaecology is an area of gynaecology that deals with issues of female incontinence, prolapse and related disorders. The Mercy unit can provide special investigations such as Urodynamics, conservative (non-surgical ) management, and surgical treatment. The unit also has a clinic for women who have had a birth complicated by a third or fourth degree tear (see Perineal Clinic).

What to do before
To attend the Urogynaecology clinic, you will need a referral from your general practitioner or another specialist.
What to bring
Please bring the results of any previous investigations, including urine culture results, ultrasounds and information about any previous related treatments.
What to expect on the day
Mercy Hospital for Women is a tertiary hospital, which means we often see patients with very complex needs.
We have a high level of demand for the types of care we provide, so it is often difficult to predict how long you may need to wait to see the doctor when you visit.
We are working to reduce our waiting times, but at this stage we need to inform you that you may wait up to two hours before you see the doctor.

Team Composition
The Urogynaecology unit is made up of gynaecologists who specialise in the area of female incontinence and prolapse and associated conditions. They work as part of a team which includes specialist nurses and physiotherapists.

For health professionals
The Urogynaecology service at Mercy Hospital for Women is a specialist gynaecology service treating women affected by a range of conditions, particularly incontinence and prolapse. We see women who have suffered complications from pelvic surgery for urinary incontinence and vaginal prolapse, including mesh complications. Within our unit we also run urodynamics clinic, perineal clinic (follow up of women who have experienced 3rd or 4th degree obstetric tears) and pessary clinic.

The role of the specialist clinic is to diagnose the condition (or to confirm the diagnosis already made by the GP) and to formulate a treatment plan. This may include allied health input, diagnostic testing, conservative management or surgical intervention. It will also include a plan for any ongoing GP input. It is expected that any patient being referred for symptoms or a diagnosis of a prolapse will have had a vaginal examination completed by the GP at the time of the referral.
