Overview
Nangnak Wan Myeek “Nurture, Care, Look after me and Mine”, program started at Mercy Hospital for Women and has expanded to include Werribee Mercy Hospital. This name was chosen by Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin in the Woirwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, whose traditional land Mercy Hospital for Women is located.
Support through this program includes:
- help accessing services, e.g. breastfeeding support and paediatrics
- support for families whose babies have been admitted to special care nursery or neonatal intensive care unit
- attending your postnatal home visits with a nurse
- advising on healthy child development, e.g. breastfeeding and immunisations
- linking you with local Aboriginal organisations and additional government supports
- helping you through difficult situations, e.g. those involved with DFFH Child Protection.
We also help you connect with Maternal and Child Health Services at the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service or through mainstream community health services and local councils.

- referral through the Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers.

The Aboriginal Women’s and Children’s Liaison Officer is located in the main hospital, adjacent to the central corridor in the Weelam-ik Murrup Dornong space, near the cafe.

We support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their families after the birth of a baby. The program is based at Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW) and Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH).
Procedural information
Referrals to the Nangnak Wan Myeek program are made internally within the hospital, through the Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers, or self referral following a birth at Mercy Hospital for Women and Werribee Mercy Hospital.
