Overview
An experienced midwife will visit you in the comfort of your own home. They will:
- check-up on the wellbeing of you and your baby
- provide advice on looking after your health and your baby’s health
- provide advice on feeding your baby (including breastfeeding)
- answer your questions.
At discharge from Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH), the midwifery in the home (MITH) team will contact you within 24 to 48 hours to arrange a time to visit you.

To prepare for your home visit, think of any questions you would like to ask the visiting midwife when they arrive.

We regularly participate in research projects. You can find more information on these projects, by talking to your visiting midwife, and how they can benefit other babies, mothers and families.

WMH – This service is for patients discharged home after having had their baby at Werribee Mercy Hospital. It operates from Monday to Sunday (except Christmas day) from 8am–4.30pm. If you need to speak with a midwife call 03 8754 3400
For health professionals
After giving birth at Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH), all women are offered a home visit once they are discharged. The purpose of this visit is to review and ensure the wellbeing of new mothers and babies at home.
Procedural information
Referrals from other health services for eligible public patients can be accepted if the woman lives in our catchment area.
How to prepare the patient
At discharge from Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH), women are informed that the midwifery in the home (MITH) team will contact them by calling or texting within 24 to 48 hours of discharge.
What/when you should refer to us
This service is for women requiring postnatal home visits in our catchment area.
What/when you should not refer to us
This services is not suitable for:
- women requiring postnatal home visits not in our catchment area
- private or ineligible patients (unless they are happy to pay for service)
- patients or home environments which might put the safety of our staff at risk.
