Overview
An x-ray examination is painless and quick. The examination will involve lying on an x-ray table, or standing against it, depending on the type of x-ray your doctor has ordered.
An ultrasound scan will involve lying on a bed. Gel will be placed on your abdomen (the area around your stomach) and a scan probe will move across your skin. The sonographer, who performs the scan, will guide you through the examination on the day.
If you need a transvaginal scan, this will be explained to you and will only be done if you consent to the examination.

Your appointment
What to do before
Please check the date and time of your appointment at least one week before you are scheduled to visit.
If you are unable to keep this appointment, please contact us at medical imaging on 03 8458 4300, so that we can use this appointment time for somebody else.
Car parking spaces can be difficult to find at a busy hospital. Please leave extra time to find a parking space so that you do not miss out on your scan.
You should be seen at your scheduled appointment time. If we are running late, we will inform you if possible. Unfortunately, we are unable to perform the scan if you are more than 10 minutes late.
Please ensure that you follow any requirements on your letter for fasting or drinking.
What to bring
Please bring the following to your appointment/admission:
- your appointment letter
- your Medicare Card
- if you are having a 20-week routine scan and wish to purchase a DVD, please bring $20 (cash only).
What to expect on the day
Although your visit may only be for a 30-minute appointment, allow an hour for the complete experience. If the patient before you has had significant difficulties, or there has been an emergency, your appointment may be delayed.
Your husband, partner, or support person is welcome to join you for the examination.
The sonographer needs to concentrate to get exactly the right image. For this reason, we suggest that young children do not attend. Please note, there are no childminding facilities in the hospital.
A short video or DVD can be made of your 20-week pregnancy ultrasound scan at a cost of $20 (cash only). Please let the reception staff know if you would like this video.
More information
Team Composition
In the department, you might meet:
- a receptionist, who will process your booking
- a sonographer, who will perform your ultrasound scan
- a radiographer, who will take your x-ray
- a radiologist, who will report your scan or x-ray.
Discharge information
You will usually have an idea of what the ultrasound has shown at the end of the scan but the final report will only go out later, after a doctor has seen the images and reported them. Your own doctor will confirm the report with you when you next see them.
