Your appointment
What to do before
Access to hand therapy, and the related services, is by referral. You will be contacted by reception staff and an appointment will be made.
Please arrive in time for your appointment or if you are unable to attend, please contact reception as soon as possible to advise and reschedule.
What to bring
If you are coming to your first appointment from another health service, you may wish to bring any relevant x-rays or investigation results.
What to expect on the day
Initial appointments may take up to an hour, particularly if you require a splint to be made.
Follow-up appointments are generally no more than 30 minutes.

Throughout your experience, you may be supported by a:
- hand therapist.
What questions should you ask
At your first appointment, you will have a full assessment and a treatment plan, based on current evidence-based practice, will be discussed with you. Your consent will be gained for any treatments.
Part of your therapy will involve home exercises or therapy tasks that you will be asked to complete in between appointments to enhance your recovery. You may also have a splint made as part of your treatment plan.
Discharge information
Your hand therapist will offer education about your condition and provide any relevant patient information hand-outs for your reference.
Additional support
You will be given home exercise/treatment programs to follow in between therapy appointments. Your hand therapist will arrange necessary follow-up appointments to support your recovery.

Procedural information
Referrals to this service are assessed against the Statewide Referral Criteria. Please utilise HealthPathways to assist in making the referral. Referrals which do not meet the Statewide Referral Criteria will be declined.
What/when you should refer to us
Please refer for the following injuries and conditions:
- conservative management of non-displaced fractures
- soft tissue injuries
- tendonitis
- trigger finger
- ganglion cysts
- arthritis
- post-surgical management of fractures
- tendon and nerve injuries.
What/when you should not refer to us
Do not refer directly to this service if your client requires emergency medical intervention for severe hand trauma, including:
- lacerated tendons, nerves and blood vessels
- displaced fractures.
