Overview
In this pregnancy model of care, women see a private obstetrician accredited with Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW) for their pregnancy and birth care.
Private obstetric care provides several important benefits. Continuity of care throughout the pregnancy and birth is particularly important to many pregnant patients and their support people. Visits throughout your pregnancy are usually with your private obstetrician, or within the obstetrician’s private group. Appointments are usually scheduled well ahead of time, so these can be planned around your other commitments. Being able to choose a private care provider whose skills and approach align with your care needs may also be important to you. Furthermore, having access to specialist advice from your known obstetrician between visits or if complications arise provides great reassurance and comfort.
The Mercy Hospital for Women is a tertiary facility (providing high-level care, education and research) with paediatric, anaesthetic and theatre staff on site 24 hours a day. Mercy Hospital for Women also has a level 6 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), capable of caring for all sick and premature infants. The co-location with the Austin Hospital also enables timely access to ICU and surgical services, in the rare instance these are required.
Single rooms (with ensuite) are determined by the medical needs of all our patients in the first instance and then by availability for those patients who have elected a single room and have private health insurance. Mercy Hospital for Women has arrangements with most health funds to minimise out-of-pocket expenses for private patient hospital admission. It is highly likely that private patients requesting a private room after birth will be able to be accommodated.
Partner package rooms (which have a double bed for a couple to share) are determined by availability when you are transferred to the ward after birth.
