Overview
All patients placed on our elective surgery waiting list for an elective operation have a pre-admission assessment. The pre-admission assessment is with a pre-admission nurse.
The pre-admission nurse will complete a thorough health assessment and will identify if you have any health conditions that may affect your operation or recovery. The pre-admission nurse will give you information on how you can prepare, and what you can expect before and after your operation.
This assessment may occur during a telephone or in-person interview.
You will be able to discuss any concerns or ask any further questions at this assessment.

Appointments are conducted in the outpatient department on level 3 or via telephone consultation with a pre-admission nurse.

Pre-admission Service: Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm. Pre-admission Clinic: Monday–Friday, 1.30pm–5pm Closed Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays
Your appointment
What to do before
If you are instructed to attend our pre-admission clinic, please allow three hours for this appointment. You will see various health professionals including a doctor, pre-admission nurse, and physiotherapist.
You do not need to fast (avoid food) for this appointment.
At your appointment, we may discuss or complete the following:
- a review of your medical history
- a pre-admission assessment
- information and preparation for your operation
- admission time
- fasting instructions for your surgery
- possible blood tests, x-rays, or electrocardiograms (ECGs)
- organising additional tests if required
- arrangements for you to see an anaesthetist before your operation if required.
What to bring
Please bring the following to your appointment:
- a list of all medicines you are currently taking, including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
- any relevant x-rays, scans or other test results or reports
- Medicare card
- Healthcare card and/or Veteran Affairs card (if you have one)
- private health insurance details (if applicable, or you want to use your private health insurance)
- reading glasses (if you need them)
- a book to read while you are waiting.
What to expect on the day
Please allow three hours for your pre-admission clinic appointment, as you will see a physiotherapist, your doctor and the pre-admission nurse.

Team Composition
Throughout your pre-admission experience, you may be supported by:
- a pre-admission nurse
- a doctor
- an anaesthetist
- a physiotherapist
- a social worker and/or pastoral carer
- clerical staff from the surgical access office.

- what are the risks of having this operation?
- what will be my length of stay in hospital?
- what do I need to bring to hospital?

- what is the date, time and place of my admission?

The pre-admission service prepares all patients booked for an elective operation at Mercy Hospital for Women.
Patients are referred to Mercy Hospital for Women’s Pre-admission Service via an internal referral following an appointment in our outpatient department.
Procedural information
All patients placed on our elective surgery waiting list for an elective operation are triaged by a pre-admission nurse. The pre-admission nurse will complete a thorough health assessment and will identify if the patient has any health conditions that may affect their operation or recovery.
If required, the pre-admission nurse will organise for the patient to see an anaesthetist prior to their operation for further review and/or investigation.
The pre-admission nurse will give the patient information on how they can prepare, and what they can expect before and after their operation.
This assessment may occur during a telephone or in-person interview.
The patient will be able to discuss any concerns or ask further questions at this assessment.
