Iron infusion GP Memo

About:

Werribee Mercy Hospital provides intravenous iron infusions through the Medical Day Stay (MDS) unit.

Referral guidelines:

ADULTS >=18 years

  • Low serum ferritin < 30
  • Serum ferritin <300 and Tsat <20% in patients with a chronic disease (e.g. chronic kidney disease, heart failure)
  • Trialled oral iron supplementation for 3 months (or is intolerant of oral supplements) and still iron deficient

PAEDIATRICS <18 years

  • Iron Deficiency Anaemia – Low HB – microcytic, hypochromic and ferritin <10
  • 3 months of oral iron supplementation

 Exclusions:

  • MDS does not investigate iron deficiency or anaemia. Patients requiring investigations should be referred to the appropriate specialty.
  • Unstable patients or patients requiring urgent treatment.
  • Werribee Mercy Hospital doesn’t provide iron infusion for 14-year-olds and below.
  • Pregnant patients can be referred to Pregnancy Day Stay for assessment and iron infusion if needed, rather than MDS

Referral process:

Referrals need to be faxed to the Medical Day Stay through 03 8754 6450

All referrals must include full blood examination and iron studies completed within the last three months.
