If you are not required to stay overnight at Werribee Mercy Hospital as part of your elective surgery, you will usually be taken to the Day Procedure Unit to recover once your surgery is finished. Here, a team of nurses and clinicians will provide care and support, and monitor your recovery until you are stable and well enough to go home.
Transfer to Day Procedure Unit (DPU)
Once your are stable in the recovery room, you will then be transferred to the Day Procedure Unit if you have had day surgery.
In the Day Procedure Unit, you will be cared for in the Stage 2 recovery area until you are stable and ready to get up.
You will be escorted into our lounge area where you will be given something to eat and drink.
Discharge and your support person
A nurse will contact your support person to come and pick you up.
Discharge education will also be given to you and your support person, so you know about the care required after your surgery.
Before you depart
Before you depart, a nurse will confirm your abilities and limitations after your surgery with you and your support person.
You will be advised about follow up. Some patients will need follow up with your GP, a specialist in private consulting suites or the outpatient department. Instructions will be given to you as appropriate. You may be required to make an appointment yourself (for GP and Private follow up). Public patients requiring clinic appointments will be given the appointment on the day or sent in the mail.
